This remarkable site was a gift from Constantine I to his mother, Helen, who constructed a small chapel to house the relics of the Holy Cross she discovered in Jerusalem and brought to Rome. Originally known as basilica Eleniana, this chapel evolved into the magnificent basilica it is today. It is also a significant stop on the “7 Churches” pilgrimage route traditionally walked during Holy Week.
• Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano - Next, visit the cathedral of Rome, which serves as the Pope’s official seat. The Archbasilica of St. John Lateran holds the distinction of being the most important and oldest church in the world. As one of the four papal basilicas in Rome, it was the original residence of the popes until the 14th century.
• Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore - Continue to the basilica believed to have been commissioned by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself. She appeared to both Pope Liberius and a Roman Patrician, Giovanni, expressing her desire for a church to be built in her honor. On August 5th, a miraculous snowfall outlined the church’s layout on the Esquiline hill, earning her the title “Lady of the Snows.” The basilica now houses the manger of the Christ child.
• Basilica Papale San Paolo Fuori le Mura - Conclude your tour at St. Paul’s Outside the Walls. Situated beyond the ancient Aurelian wall, the burial site of St. Paul was initially a small memorial known as a Cella Memoriae. Constantine I later commissioned a larger basilica to be constructed over the Cella Memoriae in honor of St. Paul. It has been demolished and rebuilt multiple times, undergoing numerous restorations and expansions. It was the largest church in Rome until the construction of St. Peter’s.
