- Vatican Museums - The Vatican Museums boast a vast collection of art that belonged to various Popes, showcasing immense artistic beauty. Here is a glimpse of some of the most stunning attractions in the Vatican Museums, including the Greek Cross Room, the Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries, Raphael Rooms, and much more!
From a modest collection of statues gathered by Julius II, it has expanded into an enormous museum, so vast that the exact number of items in the Vatican’s vaults and galleries is unknown.
- Gallery of Maps - The Gallery of Maps is a magnificent corridor where geography and history beautifully merge. Created in the late 16th century, the entire room is dedicated to custom maps depicting all of Italy. On one side of the 393-foot long gallery are two depictions of the country: one from the Imperial Roman Era and the other from the 1500s. Each map illustrates political events, religious roles, and significant battles. The ceiling is equally remarkable, adorned with frescoed scenes depicting episodes and miraculous events of apostles, saints, and martyrs, linked to the maps below.
- Gallery of Tapestries - The world-famous tapestries adorning this stunning gallery’s walls were once displayed in the Sistine Chapel before being moved to their current location. The most esteemed pieces in the collection are the carpets based on Raphael’s drawings, illustrating key scenes from the life of Jesus. Among these 9 tapestries, special attention is recommended for The Resurrection of Christ, which is woven in multiple layers, creating a surprising optical illusion as you walk by. It took the weavers 4 years to complete this masterpiece, using materials of varying densities to achieve the eye-deceiving effect.
- Stanze di Raffaello - Raphael’s most renowned frescoes are displayed in four rooms within the apartments of Pope Julius II and Leo X. The first of the Raphael Rooms (1508-1524) to be frescoed – Pope Julius II’s study – reflects themes of theology, philosophy, poetry, and justice. Raphael’s most famous painting, the School of Athens, highlights the knowledge gained through reason. The largest room, the Hall of Constantine, represents Christianity’s triumph over Paganism, the Room of Fire is dedicated to Pope Leo IV, and the Room of Heliodorus symbolizes the liberation of St. Peter. A true highlight of our Vatican tour!
- Sistine Chapel - Once inside the Vatican Museums, head straight to the main attraction – the Sistine Chapel. Marvel at Michelangelo’s breathtaking ceiling, Creation of Adam, and the Last Judgment, sharing the space with your group and a few others. Take your time and savor each moment, as this is an experience you’ll never want to forget, almost reaching out to touch one of humanity’s most extraordinary creative achievements.
- St. Peter’s Basilica - If the size of the Vatican Museums is overwhelmingly spectacular, St. Peter’s Basilica elevates the “wow factor” to another level. The sheer scale of the interiors leaves visitors searching for words to describe its vastness. At 613 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 147 feet high, it took an incredible 120 years to construct, beginning in 1506. Admire Michelangelo’s unparalleled Pietà masterpiece and stroll towards the center right nave to observe Bernini’s 30-foot high bronze Baldachin, positioned directly above St. Peter’s tomb.
-
St. Peter’s Square - A visit to Vatican City is incomplete without standing in awe of the beauty of St. Peter’s Square, also known as Piazza San Pietro. This expansive square framing St. Peter’s Basilica is where the pope holds Wednesday General Audiences and special masses on religious holidays.
Besides being a profoundly sacred place for the Catholic Church, the square itself features a breathtaking architectural design. In the late 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini erected a series of massive Doric colonnades extending out like arms from the basilica. If you stand in the right spot, the rows of four columns appear to converge as one. This optical illusion showcases the incredible architectural precision of the era!
