Garbatella stands as a one-of-a-kind district around the globe. Originally established as living quarters for the labor force deployed for constructing factories of the budding Ostiense industrial territory, its design was inventive. It comprised low-rise residential buildings (named ‘plots’) of 2 or 3-stories tall, emulating the neo-baroque architectural style, surrounded by shared landscaped areas promoting communal interaction. The architecture and purposes of these buildings underwent changes over the years, yet the district retains its allure, still emanating the feeling of being an independent city within the city.
