The castle complex is divided into two sections: the older Livonian Order Castle, constructed in the mid-15th century, and the newer residence for the Duke of Courland, built at the end of the 16th century. During the Great Northern War, the Russian military destroyed the Bauska Castle ensemble. Today, the Duke of Courland’s residence is fully restored and houses the Castle Museum, while only the ruins of the Livonian Order’s seat remain.

Over time, the palace has served various purposes, including as a hospital, elementary school, and grain storage facility.
