The Golden Circle
Reykjavik - Begin the journey with a pickup from your hotel in Reykjavik. The day will be spent exploring the renowned Golden Circle in South Iceland.
Thingvellir National Park - The first stop is Thingvellir, where the Great Atlantic Rift’s forces are prominently visible. Here, the North American and European tectonic plates separate at a rate of 2-6 cm annually. Thingvellir is also the historic site where the ancient Icelandic parliament was founded in 930.
Geysir - Next, visit the Geysir hot spring area, famous for the original Geysir hot spring, which lent its name to all other geysers. Although Geysir is no longer active, the Strokkur hot spring erupts every few minutes.
Fridheimar - Proceed to Friðheimar, a distinctive geothermal greenhouse showcasing how tomatoes and other plants are cultivated year-round using sustainable energy.
Gullfoss Waterfall - Then, be captivated by Gullfoss, the magnificent golden waterfall, celebrated for its stunning beauty and powerful cascades.
Vik - Travel to the accommodation near Vik for a 2-night stay. In the evening, there is an opportunity to hunt for the Northern Lights, weather and aurora activity permitting, with the possibility of postponement to the second night in the countryside.
White Glaciers and Black Sands
Jokulsarlon - Journey east along the southern coast to the remarkable Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Formed around 60 years ago, the Lagoon is a result of continuous calving and falling icebergs from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue. The icebergs, in shades of milky white and bright blue, create a stunning interplay of light and ice crystals.
The Lagoon is teeming with fish that drift in from the sea with the tides. During winter, seals gather in large numbers at the Lagoon’s mouth to catch fish, offering a spectacular sight.
Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon - Nearby, explore Diamond Beach, famous for its striking black sand adorned with sparkling icebergs washed ashore. These icebergs, originating from the glacier lagoon, provide a breathtaking contrast against the dark volcanic sand, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers. The ever-changing landscape of ice fragments glistening in the sunlight offers a unique and mesmerizing experience.
Vatnajokull National Park - On the return trip, pass through the breathtaking Vatnajökull National Park. This expansive protected area features Europe’s largest glacier, dramatic mountain peaks, and powerful waterfalls cascading into deep valleys. The landscape is shaped by both ice and fire, with evidence of ancient volcanic activity visible amid the lush green vegetation and glacial rivers. It’s a place where Iceland’s raw natural forces converge to create truly awe-inspiring scenery.
Vik - Overnight stay in a hotel near the village of Vík.
Volcanoes and Waterfalls
Reynisfjara Beach - Enjoy a drive along Iceland’s south coast. This coastal road offers views of glacier tongues, waterfalls, rugged hills, black sand beaches, and its renowned volcanoes. Visit the black sand beach at Reynisfjara to admire the geological formations and the crashing waves. Exercise caution as the waves can be dangerous.
Skogafoss - Next, pause to admire the majestic Skógafoss Waterfall. Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s largest and most iconic waterfalls, located on the Skógá River in the south. It plunges 60 meters (200 feet) over a rocky cliff, creating a powerful and picturesque cascade. On sunny days, the spray from Skógafoss often produces vivid rainbows, enhancing its natural beauty and making it a popular destination for visitors and photographers.
Seljalandsfoss - The next stop is Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Here, visitors can walk behind the waterfall, but it’s advisable to dress appropriately as the water mist can cause dampness.
Blue Lagoon - The final highlight before returning to Reykjavik is the spectacular Blue Lagoon. Listed by National Geographic as one of the 25 wonders of the world, it is considered a geothermal marvel. Enjoy soaking in the mineral-rich waters with its fine silica mud experience (this is an optional extra).
