Thingvellir National Park - Thingvellir National Park is an essential destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the Golden Circle route, the park is uniquely positioned in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, offering a rare opportunity to witness two continents drifting apart. It is also the historic site where Iceland’s parliament, Althing, was established in 930 AD, making it one of the world’s oldest functioning parliaments. The park is accessible after a pleasant one-hour drive.
Visitors can explore the park’s breathtaking landscape, featuring a large lake, waterfalls, and volcanic rock formations. The park provides a variety of activities, including hiking, fishing, and diving in the Silfra fissure, where you can swim between two tectonic plates. The Visitor Center offers an interactive exhibition that educates guests about Iceland’s ancient history and the park’s geological importance. -
Geysir - The Geysir Geothermal Area is a must-visit destination, famous for its bubbling hot springs and erupting geysers. After leaving Thingvellir National Park, it is approximately a 45-minute drive. The Strokkur Geysir is the most active geyser in the area, erupting every few minutes and reaching heights of up to 30 meters.
Strokkur Geysir is notable for its predictability, erupting regularly and consistently. Visitors can anticipate the eruption by watching the pre-eruption bubbling and steam rising from the pool. The geyser’s explosive display is an exhilarating sight to capture on camera.
In addition to watching Strokkur Geysir erupt, visitors can explore the geothermal area and observe various hot springs and steam vents. The surrounding landscape is extraordinary, with colorful mineral deposits and bubbling mud pools. Facilities in the area include a visitor center and restaurants. -
Gullfoss Waterfall - Known as the Golden Falls, this two-tiered waterfall drops approximately 32 meters into a rugged canyon below. Fed by Iceland’s second-largest glacier, the Langjökull, its water boasts a stunning turquoise hue due to the suspended sediment in the glacial meltwater.
A unique feature of Gullfoss is its appearance of disappearing into the earth as it cascades down the two tiers. This illusion is created by the canyon’s shape and the mist rising from the waterfall. The sound of the water crashing into the canyon is thunderous, and the mist creates a beautiful rainbow on sunny days. It is a 10-minute drive from the Geysir Geothermal Area.
There are numerous activities and sights in the surrounding area. Visitors can hike along nearby trails that offer stunning views of the waterfall and the surrounding countryside. A visitor center provides information about the area’s history and geology. - Bruarfoss Waterfall - Often referred to as the “Bridge Falls,” Bruarfoss is one of Iceland’s hidden treasures, celebrated for its striking blue waters and unique, intricate cascades. The crystal-clear waters, combined with dramatic volcanic rock formations, create a picturesque and almost otherworldly scene that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
