Exploring Iceland’s Natural Wonders: A Family Adventure at Perlan

Our family adventure in Reykjavík led us to the Wonders of Iceland exhibit at Perlan, where we explored ice caves, volcanoes, and more. This interactive museum offers a unique blend of education and entertainment, making it a must-visit for families.

A Journey Through Iceland’s Natural Wonders

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and entertaining for all ages. Our recent trip to Reykjavík led us to the Wonders of Iceland exhibit at Perlan, and it was nothing short of spectacular. This museum is a treasure trove of Icelandic natural wonders, and it offers a unique opportunity to explore the country’s geological marvels in an interactive and engaging way.

Upon entering Perlan, we were immediately drawn to the ice cave exhibit. It’s not every day you get to walk through a real ice cave, especially in a museum setting! The kids were absolutely thrilled, and I must admit, I was too. The cave was chilly, but the experience was so immersive that we hardly noticed the cold. The walls of the cave were glistening with ice, and the kids couldn’t resist touching them, feeling the smooth, cold surface beneath their fingers. It was a perfect blend of education and fun, and it set the tone for the rest of our visit.

Immersive Exhibits and Sensory Experiences

One of the highlights of our visit was the volcano exhibit. We were fortunate enough to preview a new exhibit that simulates a journey into a volcano, down to the magma chamber, and then up through an erupting volcano. The simulation was so realistic that it felt like we were actually riding the magma! The audiovisual presentations were top-notch, and the kids were captivated by the vibrant visuals and the rumbling sounds of the volcano.

Perlan goes beyond just sight and sound; it engages all the senses. In some areas, the seating vibrates to mimic the tremors of a volcanic eruption, and you can even touch volcanic rocks. The museum has also developed unique scents to capture the smell of a volcano, which was a surprising and delightful addition to the experience. The kids were fascinated by the idea of smelling a volcano, and we ended up purchasing the “island” and “lava” air fresheners from the gift shop as souvenirs.

A Panoramic View and Lasting Memories

After exploring the exhibits, we made our way to the 360° observation deck. The view over Reykjavík was breathtaking, and it was a perfect way to end our visit. The kids enjoyed spotting landmarks and taking in the panoramic scenery, while my husband and I savored the moment, reflecting on the incredible experiences we had just shared as a family.

The Wonders of Iceland exhibit at Perlan is a must-visit for families traveling to Reykjavík. It’s a place where learning and adventure go hand in hand, and it’s sure to leave a lasting impression on both kids and adults alike. Whether you’re walking through an ice cave, riding the magma in a volcano simulation, or simply enjoying the stunning views from the observation deck, Perlan offers an unforgettable experience that celebrates the natural beauty and wonder of Iceland.
