- Playa Isla Escondida - Isla Escondida is an expansive beach situated on the Atlantic coast, approximately 65 km south of Rawson, en route to the Punta Tombo reserve. This site, though seldom visited, holds significant natural value, offering the opportunity to observe southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) from the shore at a very close range.
During the visit, participants will enter the beach to explore the observation area, spending about an hour there, taking in the breathtaking scenery and watching these magnificent marine mammals in their natural habitat.
Depending on the season, visitors may see adult males, females, and pups. Males can grow up to 5 meters in length and weigh over 3,500 kg, while females are smaller, measuring about 2.5 to 3 meters long and weighing around 800 kg. Elephant seals spend nearly 70% of their lives in the water, but during breeding and molting seasons, they rest on the Patagonian beaches.
- Punta Tombo - Punta Tombo is one of the most significant Magellanic penguin reserves on the South American continent and ranks among the largest globally. The reserve welcomes visitors from September to April, aligning with the period when penguins arrive on the Patagonian coast to breed.
During the visit, participants will enjoy a walk of approximately two hours along the designated trails within the reserve, where they can stroll among the nests and observe thousands of penguins up close in their natural environment.
The colony can accommodate over half a million penguins during peak months, providing a truly remarkable wildlife experience. Along the journey, visitors can observe various stages of the reproductive cycle — from the arrival of males to prepare the nests, to egg incubation and the nurturing of chicks, which by late summer begin to molt their feathers before heading back to the sea.
