The tour exploring Ravenna kicks off at the 6th-century church named Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, constructed by Theodoric the Great, a King of Arian belief. We then proceed to the area associated with Dante, also known as the ‘silent area’, dedicated to the reverence and remembrance of Dante Alighieri. We carry on to the Neonian Baptistery afterwards. Subsequent to the Baptistery is the turn of Palazzo Rasponi, belonging to the heads of the ‘Rasponi’ family of Ravenna.
We finish our exploration with the magnificent 6th-century Basilica of San Vitale, a symbol of the reunified Roman-Byzantine empire following the Arian era. The church, with its central octagonal layout, still holds the beauty of Old Testament scenes and renowned panels of the imperial duo, Justinian and Theodora, from the Eastern Roman Empire. Adjacent to the Basilica of San Vitale, we’ll experience the Mausoleum of the 5th-century Roman Empress Galla Placidia, adorned with unique mosaic embellishments.
