The dome’s countless stars have captivated the imagination and emotions of visitors throughout the ages, including notable figures like the esteemed poet Dante Alighieri, who found inspiration in them for some verses of the Divine Comedy.

• Basilica of San Vitale - Recognized as one of the most significant monuments of early Christian art in Italy.

Dating back to the sixth century, this monument exhibits a clear Eastern influence, featuring an octagonal design topped by a large frescoed dome.

Upon entering the basilica, visitors are drawn to the lofty spaces, the magnificent mosaic decorations of the apse, and the remarkable depiction of the Byzantine imperial couple, Justinian and Theodora, with their retinues.

• Neonian Baptistery (Baptistery of the Orthodox) - Among the city’s oldest monuments, it presents a simple brick exterior but is adorned inside with marble, stucco, and mosaics reflecting a clear Hellenistic-Roman influence.

Dominating the dome, commissioned by Bishop Neone in the mid-fifth century, is the scene of Christ’s Baptism, surrounded by an exquisite procession of the twelve Apostles set against a brilliant blue tesserae background. Inside, the Renaissance-era baptismal font retains the octagonal shape of the Baptistery plan and preserves the 5th-century ambo.
