- Villa Rufolo - Villa Rufolo is the crown jewel of Ravello’s vast historical and architectural heritage. This monumental complex is named after the family that built it. In its prime during the 13th century, it boasted “more rooms than there are days in the year.” Although time and neglect have taken their toll, much has been restored, with new features added over the years, thanks to the efforts of Scottish entrepreneur Francis Nevile Reid, who owned the Villa at the turn of the 20th century.
Over ten centuries, the original core, a perfect blend of Arabic, Sicilian, and Norman architecture, has evolved with new additions, from the 18th-century cloister to the Romantic 19th-century gardens. Today, it is used by the Fondazione Ravello and the Ravello Festival.
- Villa Cimbrone Gardens - The Villa’s gardens are breathtakingly beautiful, featuring “the most beautiful imaginable flowers.” They were largely redesigned at the start of the 20th century, with significant contributions from English gardener Vita Sackville-West. These gardens are considered among the most important examples of English landscape and botany culture in Southern Europe.
Influenced by classical literature and the reinterpretation of the Roman villa, the gardens feature numerous impressive decorative elements from around the world, including fountains, nymphaea, statues, small temples, and pavilions. Some of these elements often hosted gatherings of the prestigious Bloomsbury Group, who chose Villa Cimbrone as a meeting place and source of inspiration.
