This region is a favored hiking destination, featuring several well-marked trails through the mountains and valleys. Among the most famous is the Laugavegur Trail, a 55-kilometer route beginning in Landmannalaugar and concluding in Þörsmork, another sought-after hiking locale.

• Haifoss - Háifoss is a waterfall situated in southern Iceland, near the Hekla volcano. Standing as one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, it reaches approximately 122 meters (400 feet) in height. The name “Háifoss” translates to “high waterfall” in Icelandic.

Located in the Fossárdalur valley, the waterfall is fed by the river Fossá, originating from highland glaciers. The surrounding landscape, with its rugged cliffs and volcanic rock formations, enhances the waterfall’s dramatic allure.

• Sigoldufoss - Sigöldufoss is a waterfall in Iceland’s south-central highlands. It is part of the Tungnaá river, which flows from the Hofsjökull glacier and ranks among Iceland’s largest rivers.

The waterfall stands about 15 meters (50 feet) high and is nestled in a remote, rugged area. “Sigöldufoss” means “Victory Gold Falls” in Icelandic, a name inspired by the golden hue of the water as it cascades over the rocks.

• Ljotipollur Lake - Ljótipollur is a volcanic crater lake in southern Iceland, near the popular hiking area of Landmannalaugar. Despite its name, which means “ugly puddle” in Icelandic, the lake is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and vivid color.

Situated within the Veiðivötn volcanic fissure system, known for its unique geological features, Ljótipollur spans approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) in width and 90 meters (295 feet) in depth, surrounded by steep cliffs.

The lake’s deep blue-green water contrasts sharply with the red and orange volcanic rock formations around it. The area is home to diverse plant and animal life, including Arctic char, which can be fished in the lake.

• Bláhylur - Bláhylur is a small, deep blue lake in Iceland’s highlands, near the popular hiking area of Landmannalaugar. The name “Bláhylur” translates to “blue lake” in Icelandic, aptly named for its vibrant blue waters.

Nestled within a volcanic crater, the lake is fed by hot springs, giving it a distinctive color and temperature. The water is warm and inviting for swimming, though visitors should note that the temperature can vary with weather and volcanic activity. After visiting Bláhylur, the journey returns to the starting point with another 3-4 hour drive.
