Rainbow Beach to Lake McKenzie
Rainbow Beach - Begin the day bright and early with a mandatory tour briefing at 7 am sharp at Freedom Hostel. This session provides essential information to prepare for the exciting journey ahead.
During the briefing, participants will be grouped and can arrange luggage storage. Additionally, there will be a session on safe driving practices on Fraser Island, setting the stage for the adventure.
The plan is to leave Freedom Hostel for K’gari (Fraser Island) by 8:30 am, with a short 10-minute drive to the barge (ferry). The barge crossing takes about 15 minutes, offering a chance to spot dolphins or other marine life before reaching the world’s largest sand island.
Upon arrival, the journey continues along the eastern beach, K’gari’s (Fraser Island’s) unique highway with speed limits. Enjoy the scenic drive north along the beach, stopping for morning tea at one of the island’s many freshwater creeks.
Maheno Ship Wreck - Take a brief stop at the Maheno Shipwreck to learn about this iconic K’gari landmark and capture photos of the renowned wreck.
Eli Creek - Next, visit Eli Creek, a crystal-clear stream ideal for a refreshing swim and a walk along the boardwalks to enjoy the views. Let the gentle current carry you as you admire the beautiful surroundings.
Fraser Island to Rainbow Beach
Central Station Rainforest - After breakfast, the adventure continues as the group drives south to Eurong, then inland through diverse vegetation to the rainforest at Central Station. Here, participants will leave their vehicles and follow the guide for a walk alongside the stunning Wanggoolba Creek. The guide will share the logging history of Central Station and the indigenous significance of Wanggoolba Creek before participants embark on a 1.8 km self-guided walk through the rainforest. The guide will meet them at the other end of the walk at Pile Valley, where morning tea will be served amidst towering Satinay trees.
Lake McKenzie - From Pile Valley, it’s a short drive to the renowned Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), arguably the most popular and picturesque highlight of K’gari (Fraser Island). Here, participants can relax on the pristine sandy beaches, swim, and unwind in the lake’s stunning clear waters. Lunch will be served before packing up and heading back to Eastern Beach.
Rainbow Beach - Once back on Eastern Beach, the group will head south to the barge (ferry).
From Inskip Point, it’s a brief drive back to Rainbow Beach, where the adventure concludes. The return to Freedom Rainbow Beach is scheduled between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm.
