A Warm Welcome in Quận 1

As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips and a love for culinary adventures, I found myself in the bustling heart of Quận 1, Vietnam. The class was scheduled for our last evening in the city, a perfect way to cap off our whirlwind trip. However, as life often does, it threw us a curveball. Just hours before the class, we received a message that due to an emergency, the class would be delayed. With our flight looming, this was less than ideal. But then, Chef Thao, the heart and soul behind the class, reached out personally. She asked us to stay nearby, promising to meet us shortly.

True to her word, Chef Thao arrived within twenty minutes, her presence as warm and inviting as the Vietnamese sun. She came bearing gifts—three beautifully handwritten recipes and small sample sizes of the condiments needed to recreate them. It was a gesture that spoke volumes of her dedication and passion for sharing her culture through food.

As she explained each recipe, I was reminded of the countless times I had shared my own love of teaching with my students, hoping to ignite a spark of curiosity and wonder. Chef Thao’s enthusiasm was infectious, and I found myself eager to try my hand at these dishes once I returned home.
