Quito - Departure from Quito is scheduled for early morning, around 11:30 a.m. The journey will take us south along the Avenue of the Volcanoes until reaching the town of El Chaupi. This town serves as the base for Cotopaxi-Travel, where all necessary equipment for the ascent will be prepared. Lunch will be enjoyed at Andes Alpes Restaurant before proceeding to the entrance of Cotopaxi National Park. From there, the journey continues east to the Cotopaxi parking lot (14,764ft/4864m), followed by a one-hour hike to the José Ribas Refuge (15,951 ft. / 4862 m.). Dinner will be served, and rest will be taken until midnight, at which point belongings will be packed in preparation for the final ascent.
Refugio - Cotopaxi Summit 5897 m./19,347 ft
Cotopaxi National Park - The wake-up call is at midnight, with the departure for the summit (19,347ft/5897m) scheduled for around 1 a.m., following a light breakfast and final preparations for the ascent. At the glacier’s entrance, the guide will provide essential tips for using crampons and an ice axe if necessary. The climb to the summit will take approximately 6 to 8 hours. Upon reaching the top, there will be time to capture photos of the crater and surroundings before descending back to the refuge, which will take 2 to 3 hours. Once back at the refuge, belongings will be packed, a meal will be enjoyed, and the descent to the parking lot will commence, where transportation will be ready to return to Quito (9,186ft/2800m).

The ascent to Cotopaxi’s summit is not overly technical, but it does require the use of crampons, ice axes, and ropes. Climbers depart from the refuge around midnight, beginning their ascent and reaching the summit after sunrise at 6 am. At the top, climbers are rewarded with stunning views of Cotopaxi’s crater, and on clear days, the entire city of Quito is visible.
