- Quetzaltenango - Guatemala boasts hundreds of archaeological sites, some well-known and others yet to be explored, though their existence is acknowledged. Zaculeu is located in the department of Huehuetenango, approximately 3-4 hours from Xela’s Central Park, and the journey is truly worthwhile. It is highly recommended, not only for its archaeological significance but also for the Mayan culture, history, and other attractions included in this tour.

- Ruinas de Zaculeu - Originally named Xinabajul, meaning “In Between Ravines” in the Mam Mayan language, this kingdom was conquered by the Spanish in 1525 with the assistance of Quiches and Tlaxcalan warriors. The Quiches, a Mayan ethnic group, were adversaries of Xinabajul’s kingdom. The Tlaxcalans aided in the conquest of several Guatemalan Mayan kingdoms, forming a power alliance with the Spanish conquerors. However, the conquest was challenging, taking over 30 days of warfare to achieve victory. A significant factor in their defeat was the famine suffered by Xinabajul’s warriors, who lacked access to food during the conflict.
Following the conquest, the Quiches renamed the site Zaculeu, meaning “White Land,” a name that endures to this day.
This is just a glimpse of the rich history behind this unique archaeological site. Join us with an expert tour guide to ensure you don’t miss any details.
