Palácio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz - Explore one of Portugal’s most stunning royal residences, often called the “Portuguese Versailles.” Constructed in the 18th century, this splendid Rococo palace served as the summer retreat for Portuguese royalty. Visitors can admire the lavishly decorated rooms, intricate azulejos, and the breathtaking formal gardens adorned with fountains and statues. Queluz Palace, rich in valuable artifacts, became the official residence of the royal family, particularly the Portuguese Prince Regent, the future D. João VI, and his family, until they fled to Brazil due to the French invasions. D. Pedro IV, or D. Pedro I of Brazil, was born here. It also discreetly housed Queen Mary I, “Mad Mary,” as her mental health deteriorated following D. Pedro’s death.

The basilica houses six historic organs and two monumental carillons with 98 bells.
