- Palácio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz - The Queluz National Palace, an 18th-century marvel, stands as a testament to rococo and neoclassical architecture in Portugal. Constructed in 1747 by the future King D. Pedro III, husband to Queen D. Maria I, it was designed as a summer retreat, offering a luxurious leisure space for the royal family. It also served as a discreet place of confinement for Queen D. Maria I as her mental health deteriorated following D. Pedro’s death in 1786. After a fire devastated the Ajuda Palace in 1794, the Palace of Queluz became the official residence of the Portuguese Prince Regent, the future King D. João VI, and his family. This status remained until the royal family fled to Brazil in 1807 due to the French invasion of Portugal. The palace’s grand public spaces and intimate private rooms seamlessly connect with the gardens, enhancing the overall experience.
- Castelo dos Mouros - Perched on a rocky hilltop, the Moorish Castle, dating back to the 9th century, is a beloved tourist destination in the Serra de Sintra. The castle exudes the allure of an ancient ruin, with its dense forest surroundings providing a stunning view of the rural landscape stretching to the Atlantic Ocean. Within its walls lies a rain-fed cistern and the romantic chapel of St. Peter, where intriguing remnants such as two Romanesque portals and various tombs from the medieval necropolis can still be seen.
- Palácio Nacional de Mafra - Situated in the heart of Mafra village, this National Monument uniquely combines a Royal Palace, a Basilica, and a Convent. The structure spans approximately four hectares (37,790 m2) and is built from the abundant lioz stone found in the Mafra region. It comprises 1,200 rooms, over 4,700 doors and windows, 156 staircases, and 29 courtyards and halls. Noteworthy features include the Library, housing a collection of over 36,000 volumes; the bell ensemble with two chimes totaling 98 bells; and the six historic organs that resonated once more in the Basilica in 2010.
- Ericeira - Ericeira is a charming fishing village that has evolved into a premier resort destination. Its historic center invites visitors to explore narrow, winding streets that evoke a sense of the past. The village’s deep connection to the sea is evident, with the vast ocean serving as a picturesque backdrop to the homes. The cliffs lining Ericeira Beach add to its unique beauty, as do the fishing boats that deliver the freshest seafood to the village’s many restaurants. This quaint fishing village is a must-visit for surfers, as it is one of the few places globally designated as a World Surfing Reserve. Within its borders, the white, blue, and yellow hues reflect the area’s indescribable light. The scent of the sea guides visitors to the coast, where they can fully experience the essence of Ericeira.
