- Queenstown - The journey begins in the breathtaking city of Queenstown. As the tour departs the city, the guide will not only set the stage for the day’s adventure but also highlight some of the area’s top attractions.
- Lake Wakatipu - Leaving Queenstown, the route winds around Lake Wakatipu, offering stunning views of ‘The Remarkables’ Mountain Range and the lake itself.
- Devil’s Staircase Lookout Point - Continuing along the lake, the tour passes through Devil’s Staircase. This elevated, winding section of the road is renowned for its dramatic photo opportunities and sets the tone for the day ahead.
- Te Anau - After enjoying more spectacular views of mountains, rivers, and farmland, the tour arrives in Te Anau, home to Lake Te Anau, New Zealand’s second-largest lake. In this charming town, there will be a 30-minute break to stretch, enjoy a morning coffee, grab a bite to eat, and perhaps encounter some local wildlife. Continuing along the lake, the tour stops at Te Anau Downs, the starting point for the Milford Track, to hear stories and admire the scenery.
- Eglinton Valley - Departing Te Anau and entering Fiordland National Park, the tour stops in Eglinton Valley. With views reminiscent of Lord of the Rings, this valley follows the path of an ancient glacier through Fiordland. As one of the first major attractions upon entering the park, it sets the stage for a journey that becomes increasingly impressive.
- Mirror Lakes Walk - The next stop on this epic adventure is Mirror Lakes for a brief walk to see the famous reflections of the Earl Mountains. On the right day, a well-taken photo will make it hard to tell which way is up.
- Lake Gunn - Continuing along the Milford Road, the tour encounters Lake Gunn. Named after a renowned explorer and popular for fishing, Lake Gunn is often a stop for photos and to enjoy the tranquility.
- Falls Creek Falls - A short drive away, the tour begins passing the Hollyford River, a beautiful and powerful river filled with large boulders and rapids. Feeding into the river at Falls Creek is the first of the area’s impressive waterfalls, with many more to come.
- Darran Mountains - As the tour climbs in altitude, it ventures deeper into the Darran Mountains, requiring another stop to admire and photograph the views. This area is also home to the Kea, the world’s largest alpine parrot. Keep an eye out for these large, playful, and colorful birds that never fail to delight and entertain.
- Homer Tunnel - To descend towards the sea, the tour enters the awe-inspiring hand-built Homer Tunnel, where the incredible history and stories are shared. Emerging from the tunnel, the valley descends sharply towards Milford Sound, and on a rainy day, hundreds of waterfalls can be seen cascading down the mountainside.
- Milford Sound - Following the valleys to the sea, the tour arrives at Milford Sound, where guests will board a cruise with one of the exceptional cruise partners. This experience offers a boutique cruise on a smaller, less crowded boat with a crew that provides a more informative and personal tour of Milford Sound. The smaller boat allows for closer encounters with wildlife and nature, including New Zealand fur seals basking on the rocks, massive rock faces rising hundreds of meters from the sea, and waterfalls cascading from an ancient rainforest high in the mountains. This cruise is unparalleled.
- Mitre Peak - During the boat cruise, guests can marvel at the awe-inspiring Mitre Peak, the iconic mountain of Milford Sound, with its steep triangular peak rising high above the reflective waters.
- Pops View Look Out - On the return journey, the tour stops to admire the elevated views of the divide in the Southern Alps, near the start of the Routeburn Track. Here, the guide shares stories of ancient Maori explorers.
- Te Anau - Unfortunately, it’s time to head back to Te Anau, but the day is not over with a fully guided return trip and possibly some surprise stops along the way. Guests will be dropped off at their central accommodation upon arrival in Te Anau.
