Beautiful but Long Day – Worth It if You Plan Ahead - The highlight of my trip to Aotearoa was the day trip to Piopiotahi / Milford Sound. I had been warned that the road there is extremely winding, and since I couldn’t guarantee where I would be sitting on the bus, I was concerned about motion sickness. I stopped at a pharmacy in Queenstown and bought Sea-Legs and some snack for the bus ride. The pharmacist recommended taking it the night before and warned it might make me drowsy—and it definitely did. Fortunately, I was able to nap during the ride and still wake up whenever our driver pointed out important sights along the way. I was staying at the Hilton and joined the tour at the Frankton Bus Interchange. Most passengers had boarded earlier, and another small group joined in Te Anau. I was lucky enough to have an empty seat next to me, which made the long journey much more comfortable. The coach itself was well equipped, with USB ports at every seat, additional ports and outlets near the lavatory area, and a glass roof that made the scenery even more enjoyable. Our driver mentioned that Milford Sound typically receives more than 2,000 visitors daily, and it definitely felt busy. There were buses and minibuses everywhere, and some people could be quite pushy at the stops and on the cruise. Also, if the parking areas are full, buses sometimes have to skip scheduled stops—we unfortunately missed one because of this. My cruise was aboard the Pure Milford catamaran, which included a simple sack lunch. Most passengers headed straight to the outdoor rooftop deck, but because it was full chose to sit downstairs near the front. Once we were underway, the crew opened the front and rear doors so passengers could step outside to the forward and rear outdoor decks for great views. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day, with waterfalls cascading down the cliffs and even a few seals spotted along the rocks. The return trip to Queenstown was another 4+ hours, with only one stop in Te Anau for a bathroom and beverage break. I used the time to nap and enjoy the scenery. Tips: • If you’re prone to motion sickness, take medication before the trip. • Expect crowds—it’s a very popular destination. • If you are on the Pure Milford catamaran, a little patience goes a long way. Stay inside toward the front of the ship. Once the crew opens the front door, select your spot on the forward outdoor deck! • Bring a fully charged phone or camera to capture the scenery along the drive and during the cruise. Despite the long travel time, Milford Sound is absolutely stunning and well worth the visit.

Competent and knowledgeable - 12 hours is hard work but its worth the trip. It saves driving all that way and Queenstown is a fabulous base. On the 5 hours travelling to Milford Sound there are plenty of loo breaks and photo opportunities. Milford sound is well worth a visit especially on a sunny day. A 2 hour cruise is beautiful amidst mountain ranges hard to describe. On the 5 hours back you can sleep. The bus has a see through ceiling to see peaks of mountains and the driver was extremely competent and good natured. The person commentating on the cruise was extremely knowledgeable.

Great driver, great day - Our driver Hamish was remarkable, at the wheel and in dealing with rude and inconsiderate passengers. A class act. The trip to the majestic fiord is well worth the time.
