Visitors can explore ancient human settlements, remnants of a large prehistoric cromlech, and other evidence of the region’s inhabitants from the Stone Age and later periods. The museum boasts a collection of over 100,000 archaeological items, including unique artifacts and tools from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic eras. Animated displays and video materials provide insights into the natural changes in Gobustan, the geography of human settlements, and the culture and beliefs of ancient peoples.
- Mud Volcanoes - Azerbaijan, along with its Caspian coastline, hosts nearly 400 mud volcanoes, accounting for more than half of the world’s total. In 2001, a mud volcano located 15 kilometers from Baku gained international attention when it unexpectedly erupted with flames reaching 15 meters high. These mud volcanoes are closely linked to underground hydrocarbon and petrochemical reserves, which cause gas to escape to the surface.
- Bibi-Heybat Mosque - The Bibi-Heybat Mosque is a historic mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan. The current structure, built in the 1990s, is a reconstruction of the original mosque erected in the 13th century by Shirvanshah Farrukhzad II Ibn Ahsitan II, which was demolished by the Bolsheviks in 1936. The mosque houses the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, a descendant of Muhammad, and serves as a spiritual center for Muslims in the region. It is a significant monument of Islamic architecture in Azerbaijan and is locally referred to as “the mosque of Fatima,” a name given by Alexandre Dumas during his visit in the 1840s.
