- Al-Azhar Mosque - Begin the tour with a pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza by a tour guide. Al-Azhar Mosque, romanized as al-Jāmiʿ al-ʾAzhar, meaning ‘The Resplendent Congregational Mosque’, is commonly referred to as al-Azhar in Egypt. This Egyptian mosque, located in Islamic Cairo, was commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid dynasty for the new capital city in 970. Its name is believed to be derived from az-Zahrāʾ, meaning “the shining one,” a title given to Fatimah. It holds the distinction of being the first mosque established in Cairo.
- Al-Hussein Mosque - The (Sayyidna)-Hussein Mosque (Egyptian Arabic: جامع سيدنا الحسين) is a mosque and mausoleum initially constructed in 1154 and later rebuilt in 1874. Situated in Cairo, Egypt, near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar in the Al-Hussain area, it is regarded as one of Egypt’s holiest Islamic sites. Named after Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussain ibn Ali, some Shia Muslims believe Hussain’s head is interred on the mosque grounds, where the mausoleum now stands, representing the remaining Fatimid architecture in the building.
- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a grand mosque and madrassa located in Cairo’s historic district. Built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, it was commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan. Renowned for its vast size and innovative architectural features, it remains one of Cairo’s most impressive historic monuments.
- Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Cairo, also known as the Citadel of Saladin, is a medieval Islamic-era fortress in Cairo, Egypt. Constructed by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further developed by later Egyptian rulers, it served as Egypt’s government seat and the rulers’ residence for nearly 700 years, from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Positioned on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo, it offers a strategic view over the city and dominates the skyline. At its construction, it was among the most ambitious military fortification projects of its era. Today, it is a preserved historic site featuring mosques and museums.
- Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As - The Mosque of Amr ibn al-As (Arabic: جامع عمرو بن العاص), also known as the Mosque of Amr, was originally built in 641–642 AD as the center of Egypt’s newly founded capital, Fustat. It was the first mosque constructed in Egypt and all of Africa. By the twentieth century, it was the fourth largest mosque in the Islamic world. The mosque’s location was the site of the tent of the Muslim army’s commander, General Amr ibn al-As. One corner of the mosque houses the tomb of his son, ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As. Although extensive reconstruction over the centuries means none of the original building remains, the rebuilt mosque is a prominent landmark in what is now known as Old Cairo. It is an active mosque with a dedicated congregation and is open to visitors and tourists when prayers are not in session.
- Mosque of Muhammad Ali - The Mohamed Ali Mosque, considered one of Cairo’s most beautiful mosques, is also known as the Alabaster Mosque due to its outer walls being covered in Alabaster Stone.
- Al Rifai Mosque - Followed by a visit to the renowned Al-Rifa’i Mosque, located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, dating back to around 1361. Architecturally designed to complement the older structure, it was part of a vast campaign by 19th-century Egyptian rulers to associate themselves with the perceived glory of earlier Islamic periods in Egypt’s history and to modernize the city.
