Sailing to Serenity: A Day on Tortuga Island
When the waves take a break, I seek new adventures. The Tortuga Island Tour promised a day of sun, sea, and relaxation, and it delivered beyond expectations. Join me as I recount a day of snorkeling, beachside bliss, and island exploration.
Setting Sail to Paradise
The sun was just beginning to rise as I made my way to the Los Suenos Resort & Marina, the starting point for the Tortuga Island Adventure. As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless mornings chasing the perfect wave, but today was about something different—a full day of relaxation and exploration on Tortuga Island. The anticipation was palpable as I boarded the catamaran, greeted by the friendly crew and a light breakfast of fresh fruit and muffins. The sea was calm, and the 45-minute ride to the island was smooth sailing, even for someone like me who occasionally battles seasickness.
Upon arrival, the island welcomed us with open arms. Beach chairs and umbrellas were already set up, inviting us to unwind and soak in the sun. The crew, led by our host Wilber, was attentive and personable, learning everyone’s names and ensuring we felt at home. It was a level of service that reminded me of the all-inclusive resorts I’ve visited in the past, but with the added charm of being on a secluded island.
Diving into Adventure
The call for snorkeling came about 30 minutes after we settled in, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to explore the underwater world. The crew guided us to a nearby rock, where the vibrant marine life awaited. As someone who spends a lot of time in the ocean, I was thrilled to see the diversity of sea creatures up close. The staff even fed the fish, bringing them closer for us to admire. I was particularly fascinated by the starfish and octopus that our guides brought up from the depths.
After snorkeling, I took a moment to float in the warm ocean waters, reflecting on the beauty of the day. Lunch was served shortly after, a delicious spread of grilled chicken, rice, salad, and potatoes. The “jungle juice” and other drinks flowed freely, thanks to Reuban, who went above and beyond by wading into the ocean to deliver refills. It was a moment of pure bliss, the kind that makes you forget about the world beyond the island.
Embracing the Island Vibe
The afternoon was a time to embrace the island’s laid-back vibe. While some opted for the banana boat ride or the optional hikes, I chose to continue floating in the ocean, savoring the tranquility. My husband, ever the thrill-seeker, took the “crazy” banana boat ride and returned with tales of flying off into the water, laughter echoing across the beach.
As the day drew to a close, we reluctantly boarded the catamaran for the journey back. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the water, a perfect end to a perfect day. The Tortuga Island Adventure was more than just a tour; it was an escape, a chance to disconnect and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Costa Rica. For anyone visiting the area, this is an experience not to be missed. Just remember to pack your sunscreen and let the crew take care of the rest.
