- Paradise Island & The Mangroves (Cayo Arena) - From these northwestern shores, boats set sail to the offshore Cayo Arena, also known as Cayo Paraíso, offering excellent diving opportunities for beginners, starting at five meters (16 feet). Schools of tropical fish are easily visible in the shallow turquoise waters, making it a paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts. This area is home to some of the richest marine life in the Dominican Republic, with corals and sponges surrounding the caye, where octopuses, crabs, schools of surgeonfish, sergeant majors, damselfish, angelfish, and yellowtail snappers swim around. This small sandbank is also an idyllic spot to relax and capture numerous beach selfies.
- Monte Cristi National Park (Parque Nacional Monte Cristi) - The dry, subtropical forest landscape around El Morro is bordered by extensive mangrove stands that can be explored on foot or by boat through a network of inland waterways and lagoons, perfect for swimming. Iguanas and numerous bird species inhabit the mangroves and forest of El Morro, including frigatebirds, herons, egrets, the American oystercatcher, and waterfowl, including migratory species. The park entrance is conveniently located less than a ten-minute drive from town, and several tour companies offer boat excursions around the lagoons and mangroves.
