Grebes, Andean gulls, and cormorants are commonly spotted here — your guide will highlight them as the boat navigates through the reserve.

Upon reaching the islands, you’ll observe firsthand how the Uros sustain their home: cutting fresh totora reeds and layering them over the island’s surface to maintain its firmness and buoyancy. You’re invited to pick up a knife and participate. It’s a physical, slightly muddy experience, and one of the most direct ways to comprehend how intricately this community’s daily life is connected to the surrounding lake.

Many visitors view the Uros floating islands from a tour boat and then continue on their journey. This unique experience allows participants to step onto the islands themselves, collaborating with the families who have constructed and reconstructed their homes on layers of totora reed for generations.

Participants will have the opportunity to cut fresh reeds from the lake and assist in laying them down — a maintenance routine the Uros perform every couple of weeks to prevent their islands from sinking. There is also an opportunity to set up fishing nets along the shore using traditional techniques, and if desired, try on traditional Uro clothing for a while.

Between activities, the community shares insights into their daily craft work. Participants can observe them weaving textiles and crafting intricate jewelry, and the community is eager to explain the process. Waterfowl frequently visit the lake, ensuring there is always something happening around — contributing to the islands’ atmosphere as a vibrant, living, working home rather than just a tourist destination.
