Third Time on the Taco Tour - and Won't Be the Last! - Over the last several years, this was my third time on this tour. Besides the amazing food, Karla (with a K!) was amazing. Her genuine kindness and her knowledge of the area and the vendors put this excursion over the top. Every single taco tour stop was fabulous. Honestly, it's hard to pick a favorite. We even had one person in our group with dairy allergies, which they accomodated without any issues! This a great way to taste authentic food, learn how to order on your own, and support local establishments. Not to mention, a GREAT way to have fun with friends and introduce them to the REAL Puerto Vallarta! PS.... Karla, Karla, Karla! (IYKYK) :-)

Puerto Vallarta: A Slice of Local Life and Food - This is a tour for visitors who are interested in moving beyond the usual tourist haunts that serve mediocre and overpriced food and margaritas. The tour was three hours long and covered about 2 miles around the “zona romantica” the oldest neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta. The terrain is slightly hilly with uneven cobblestones so comfortable shoes are recommended. The tour guide provided bottled water and there were plenty of opportunities to sit or use the facilities along the way. Our tour guide, Alberto, was a zona romantica native and a silversmith by trade who conducts tours because he loves people and loves food. He knows all the ins and out of the neighborhood and was greeted frequently by residents and shop owners. Alberto’s knowledge of the neighborhood, its people, and its food is encyclopedic. We made 5 stops for tacos and each stop featured a different type of taco. Alberto explained to us the history of the taco, how each taco is prepared and served and how it should be garnished. Each taco was more delicious than the last with fillings ranging from carnitas, birria, fish and even sweetbreads. Each taco was washed down by a different aqua fresca, a refreshing soft drink made from local fruits and flowers. The venues were street vendors and modest restaurants, most of which had existed for over 40 years. The people were unfailingly friendly and welcoming. Alberto explained how to identify the most sanitary establishments and how the historical lack of refrigeration forced the people to use only the freshest ingredients. Added bonuses were stops at a local market, a local bakery where we sampled fresh, hot pastries, a local tortilla factory where we witnessed the manufacturing process, an ice cream shop where we could try exotic flavors, and a candy shop where we sampled locally made candies and liqueurs. The taco tour was a tremendous learning and culinary experience. Alberto is a fantastic tour guide who loves his work, loves his neighborhood and loves food. We could not have been more pleased to experience the history, culture, people and food of Puerto Vallarta.

Taco extravaganza! - It’s a LOT of brisk walking in between stops, but the tacos are well worth it! Pace yourself; we shared several tacos between two people and that way we didn’t miss out and the end when people were super full!

Best way to learn how the locals eat - First, Kevin, our tour guide was awesome. Very friendly but most important he really took time to explain Puerto Vallarta, the food we were eating as well as the history of the places we ate. He told us about the families that owned the Fondas (a new word for me) where we ate. I think we went to 4 Fondas, a food stand, tortilla factory, ice cream shop and a candy store.... We walked a lot of the back streets but it was very doable.... If I got this right, we had Migas con pollo, Tacos dorados de birria (Res or Pollo), traditional street tacos - asada, pollo, pastor, chorizo, another place I don't remember... I ate a lot, ok..... The ice cream shop was very unique with excellent ice cream or popcicles all made with fresh fruit. Almost forgot, we also went to a bakery that provides a lot of product to the local businesses.

A lot of eating! - It was cool to walk around and see different parts of PV that we probably wouldn't have otherwise. A great value because of all the food you got, but I was full after the first two stops! Be sure to bring a big eater with you to finish off the extras!
