From Waves to Whisks: A Surfer’s Culinary Adventure in Puerto Vallarta
In search of a new adventure, I traded my surfboard for a spatula and joined a cooking class in Puerto Vallarta. What followed was a day of flavors, laughter, and a deeper connection to the local culture.
A Culinary Adventure Begins
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves and soaking up the sun in some of the most beautiful beach towns in Central America. But every now and then, I like to switch things up and dive into the local culture in a different way. That’s how I found myself in Puerto Vallarta, ready to embark on a culinary adventure with Cookin’ Vallarta.
The day started with a bit of a challenge—finding the meeting spot. Thankfully, our cab driver was a local and knew exactly where to take us. We arrived just in time to meet our group on the corner, and right at 10 o’clock, Chef Enrique, our guide for the day, appeared with a warm smile and a promise of a day filled with flavors.
Armed with shopping bags, we ventured into the bustling Mercado Palmar De Aramara. The market was alive with vibrant colors and enticing aromas, a sensory overload that reminded me of the lively surf towns I’ve visited. We picked up fresh ingredients, and then it was off to a local tortilla factory. Watching the tortillas being made was a fascinating experience, and I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the precision and skill required in surfing.
Cooking Up a Storm
With our bags full of fresh produce, we piled into Chef Enrique’s van and headed to his home. The drive was a scenic one, with glimpses of the ocean peeking through the trees, a reminder of the waves waiting for me later.
Chef Enrique’s home was a haven of culinary creativity. The kitchen was spacious and inviting, with his wife and two helpers ready to guide us through the cooking process. Everyone in the group got involved, chopping, slicing, and smashing ingredients. It was a communal effort, much like the camaraderie found among surfers waiting for the perfect wave.
We started by making our own tacos from scratch, shaping and cooking them to perfection. The guacamole was a revelation, served with pork rinds instead of the usual tortilla chips. The flavors were bold and unexpected, much like the thrill of catching an unexpected wave.
The tortilla soup was next, a rich broth with a depth of flavor that surprised me. It was a reminder of the complexity and beauty of the ocean, with layers of taste that unfolded with each spoonful. And then there were the pomegranate margaritas—refreshing and unique, a perfect complement to the meal.
A Feast to Remember
The main course was a masterpiece—pork cooked on banana leaves, served with white beans and our handmade tortillas. The flavors were a symphony, each bite a reminder of the vibrant culture and culinary heritage of Mexico.
Our group was a diverse mix of people from all over the country, each bringing their own stories and experiences to the table. It was a joy to share a meal with such an eclectic bunch, much like the diverse community of surfers I’ve encountered on my travels.
To cap off the day, Chef Enrique brought out a shot of Mezcal or tequila, and we toasted to a wonderful afternoon. It was a fitting end to a day filled with laughter, learning, and delicious food.
As I left Chef Enrique’s home, I felt a sense of fulfillment, much like the satisfaction of a perfect surf session. This culinary adventure was a reminder that there’s more to life than just chasing waves—sometimes, it’s about savoring the flavors and experiences that come your way.
