Whispers of the Falcon: A Calabrian Adventure
In search of an alternative to the typical mid-August holiday, I ventured to Civita in Calabria’s Pollino National Park. Here, I discovered the enchanting world of falconry, guided by the passionate Roberto and his majestic birds of prey.
A Journey into the Heart of Calabria
The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the ancient village of Civita. I found myself wandering through its narrow streets, a place where time seemed to stand still. The village, nestled in the heart of the Calabrian Pollino National Park, whispered stories of its Arbreshe heritage and the legendary Raganello gorges. It was here that I embarked on an adventure that would lead me into the mysterious world of falconry.
The morning began with a sense of anticipation as I joined a group of fellow explorers for an orienteering session. Led by Roberto, a naturalistic guide with an infectious passion for the land, we navigated the village with map and compass in hand. As we walked, Roberto regaled us with tales of the Devil’s Bridge, a structure steeped in myth and intrigue. The air was thick with history, and I felt a connection to the past that was both exhilarating and humbling.
The Dance of the Falcons
After a leisurely picnic in the countryside, where the laughter of children mingled with the braying of Napoleon the donkey, I was ready to delve deeper into the world of birds of prey. Roberto, a seasoned falconer, welcomed us into his realm with open arms. His knowledge of these majestic creatures was profound, and his passion was contagious.
The falconry experience was unlike anything I had imagined. It was not a spectacle of aerial acrobatics but rather an intimate encounter with the birds themselves. Roberto’s aim was to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for these regal animals. As I stood in the presence of Shira, the eagle owl, and Cloud, the barn owl, I was struck by their grace and intelligence. Each bird had a story, a personality, and a presence that commanded respect.
An Encounter with Majesty
The highlight of the day was meeting Her Majesty, the Eagle Queen. As I stood mere feet away from this magnificent creature, I could feel the power and majesty emanating from her. Her eyes, sharp and piercing, seemed to see into the very soul of the world. It was a moment of awe and reverence, a reminder of the beauty and mystery that still exists in our world.
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the experience. It was a journey not just into the world of falconry, but into the heart of a land rich with history and culture. The Birds of Prey Experience had opened my eyes to the wonders of nature and the importance of preserving these ancient traditions. It was a day that would linger in my memory, a testament to the power of exploration and discovery.
