A Splash of Nature and Culture

Our adventure began with a splash at the Reserva Ecologica El Corchito, a hidden gem that felt like a secret garden. As we stepped into this raccoon ecopark, the kids’ eyes widened with excitement at the sight of raccoons playfully darting around. The fresh water springs were a refreshing oasis, perfect for a family dip. The crystal-clear water was teeming with fish, and the kids had a blast trying to spot them all. Clean bathrooms and snacks were a welcome sight for us parents, making it a stress-free start to our day.

Our guide, Jesus, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing fascinating tidbits about the local wildlife and ecosystem. His passion for the area was infectious, and it was clear that this wasn’t just a job for him—it was a family legacy. The small group size made the experience feel intimate and personal, a far cry from the crowded tours we often try to avoid.

Salt Flats and Ancient Ruins

Next, we ventured to the mesmerizing salt flats of Xtampú. The landscape was otherworldly, with vast expanses of shimmering salt stretching as far as the eye could see. Jesus, being close to the owner, gave us the unique opportunity to walk in the salt water—a privilege not afforded to the larger tour groups. The kids were fascinated by the process of salt harvesting, and we couldn’t resist purchasing some salt rock souvenirs.

Our journey continued to the Xcambo Archaeological Zone, where history came alive amidst the ancient Mayan ruins. Jesus’s storytelling transported us back in time, painting vivid pictures of the Mayan civilization. The kids were particularly enthralled by the iguanas that seemed to guard the ruins, adding an element of adventure to our exploration. While the facilities were basic, the experience was rich and rewarding.

Beachside Bliss

Our final stop was the family-owned Sergio’s Beach House, a slice of paradise nestled in a quaint neighborhood. The views were breathtaking, with the ocean stretching out before us like a shimmering blanket. The kids immediately made a beeline for the pool, while my husband and I savored the delicious buffet-style meal prepared by the family. The outdoor bar was a hit, offering refreshing drinks to cool us down after a day of exploration.

Meeting Sergio and his family was the cherry on top of an already fantastic day. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel like part of the family, and it was clear that they took immense pride in sharing their corner of the world with us. As we watched the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories we had created together.
