Kind Driver, but Poor Planning Made the Trip Extremely Stressful - I’ve gone back and forth about writing this review because our driver himself was kind and communicative, but unfortunately, the overall travel experience was not as expected. Leading up to the trip, everything was handled very well. Our driver reached out the day before to confirm details, stayed in contact as we landed, provided water, and made sure everything was set. From a communication and courtesy standpoint, he was wonderful, and we initially felt very confident in our choice. The issues began once we were en route to Mérida. My husband and I have traveled to Mexico, and specifically to Mérida, many times, so we’re very familiar with the typical drive. Instead of taking the main freeway (the toll road), which significantly cuts down travel time, the driver took back roads and what ended up being the longest possible route. There was no traffic that day, yet our travel time exceeded four and a half hours, which is far longer than normal. It became clear that the freeway was likely avoided to skip paying tolls, which was extremely frustrating given the cost of the private transfer. Sitting in the car that long for no real reason was exhausting and unnecessary. Additionally, the driver did not have GPS on his phone. We ended up using my phone for navigation until the phone died, which immediately made us uncomfortable. Once we arrived in Mérida, the situation worsened, the driver drove around aimlessly because he couldn’t locate our destination, and at one point he even took my wife's phone out of the car to ask a stranger for directions. This made us feel uneasy, especially after such a long drive. To add to the stress, when we arrived in Mérida, the vehicle only had about 20 miles of fuel remaining, which further increased our concern that we might not even make it to our hotel due to poor planning and route choices. While our driver was genuinely kind and well-intentioned, the lack of proper navigation, route planning, fuel planning, and the decision to avoid toll roads made this experience extremely disappointing; especially given the price we paid for a private transfer. Reliability, efficiency, and preparedness are essential for a service like this, and unfortunately, those elements were missing. I truly wanted to leave a positive review because of how friendly the driver was, but the travel experience itself was stressful and far below expectations.
