Rolous Group, Banteay Srey & Banteay Samre Temples
Prasat Bakong - Begin with a transfer to the Roluos Group, including Bakong, situated south of Preah Ko. Enter and exit the temple from the east. A contemporary Buddhist temple is located to the right of Bakong’s east entrance. Constructed in the late ninth century (881) by King Indravarman I, it is dedicated to Shiva (Hindu). Prah Ko, built in the late ninth century (879) for the king’s parents, maternal grandparents, and a former king, Jayavarman II, and his wife, mirrors the Prah Ko style of art. Lolei, built on an islet in the center of a large reservoir (now rice fields) by Yasovarman I, marks the founding of the first city at Angkor.
Banteay Srei - Next, explore Banteay Srei, celebrated as the jewel of classical Khmer art. This tenth-century temple is famous for its intricate decorations carved in pink sandstone, adorning the walls like a tapestry. Banteay Srei, meaning “Citadel of Women” in Khmer, is a relatively new name.
Banteay Samre - Visit one of Angkor’s most complete complexes, restored using the “anastylosis” method. The name Samre refers to an ethnic group of mountain people who lived at the base of Phnom Kulen and were likely related to the Khmers. Although no inscriptions have been found, the architecture reflects the classic art of the middle period, similar to Angkor Wat. Banteay Samre’s proportions are magnificent, featuring a unique interior moat with laterite paving, which, when filled with water, must have created a magical atmosphere.
Angkor Thom City, Ta Prohm & Angkor Wat Temple
Angkor Thom South Gate - Begin with a transfer from the hotel to the South Gate of Angkor Thom. On the left side of the moat, 54 ‘devas’ (guardian gods) pull the head of the snake ‘Shesha,’ while on the right side, 54 ‘asuras’ (demon gods) pull the snake’s tail in the opposite direction. Bayon, with over 2000 large faces carved on 54 towers, gives this temple its majestic character. The bas-reliefs depict everyday life scenes—markets, fishing, festivals with cockfights and jugglers—and historical scenes with battles and processions. Baphuon, built in the mid-11th century (1060) by King Udayadityavarman II, is dedicated to Shiva (Hindu). Phimeanakas, constructed in the late tenth century to early 11th century by King Jayavamen V and Udayadityavarman I, is also dedicated to Hinduism. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also noteworthy.
Ta Prohm Temple - Then, visit Ta Prohm (The Ancestor Brahma, Jungle Temple). Enveloped in dense jungle, Ta Prohm exudes a romantic aura. Fig, banyan, and kapok trees spread their massive roots over stones, prying walls and terraces apart, while their branches and leaves form a canopy over the structures. Tree trunks twist among stone pillars.
Angkor Wat - In the afternoon, explore Angkor Wat. This temple is bustling at any time of day, offering opportunities to admire its architectural splendor and exquisite bas-reliefs. A stroll between the outer laterite wall and the moat’s interior reveals serene scenes of rural life.
Beng Mealea & Tonle Sap Lake
Beng Mealea - Transfer to Beng Mealea, hidden in the jungle and nearly forgotten by locals. This little-explored temple from the 11th century awaits discovery by adventurous travelers. The sprawling jungle temple, covering over one square kilometer, is largely overtaken by vegetation. Built in a style reminiscent of Angkor Wat, Beng Mealea may have served as a prototype for Angkor Wat.
Kompong Khleang - Visit Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, to see the captivating floating village of Kompong Khleang. The area features a beautiful river with a flooded forest, diverse fish species, and water birds. The lake’s edge is adorned with green grass fields and village houses perched on high stilts above the water.
