It was here that Czechoslovakia’s independence was declared in 1918.
- Karolinum - Situated in Prague’s Old Town, the Karolinum is a complex of buildings that serves as the seat of Charles University. The founding of Charles University in 1348 is one of the most notable achievements of Charles IV.
- Wenceslas Square (Vaclavske namesti) - Part of the New Town established by Emperor Charles IV in 1348, Wenceslas Square was originally known as the Horse Market. It has been the site of many pivotal events, including the Velvet Revolution in 1989, which ended the Communist regime.
- Staromestske namesti - The Old Town Square is perhaps Prague’s most renowned square, encircled by historic palaces and churches. Numerous significant events in the nation’s history have occurred here.
- Old Town Hall with Astronomical Clock - The magnificent Old Town Hall, featuring a 60-meter tower, was constructed in 1338. Its earthy orange façade is highlighted by a Renaissance window from 1520, the inscription Praga Caput Regni, and the Old Town coat-of-arms. Visitors gather hourly to witness the 15th-century astronomical clock, where Death tips an hourglass and rings a bell before the 12 apostles parade, the cock crows, and another bell chimes.
- Josefov - Named after Emperor Josef II, the Prague Jewish Quarter, Josefov, contains remnants of the city’s former Jewish ghetto and is among the world’s most revered Jewish sites, featuring ancient synagogues and an old cemetery. Unlike many Jewish sites in Europe, it was not destroyed during WWII. This area is closely associated with Franz Kafka (1883 – 1924) and the mystical Golem, created by Jehuda ben Bezalel, also known as Rabbi Löw.
- Charles Bridge - The Charles Bridge is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic bridges globally. Commissioned by King Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, it has connected Prague’s Old Town with the Lesser Quarter and Prague Castle for centuries. The bridge is adorned with 30 Baroque statues, primarily sandstone, added in the 18th century. Most statues seen today are replicas. The first statue on the Charles Bridge is bronze, depicting St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of Bohemia. Legend says John of Nepomuk was thrown from the bridge for refusing to disclose the confessions of King Wenceslas IV’s wife. That night, five stars appeared above his death site, hence the five-starred halo on his statues. Charles Bridge offers breathtaking views of Prague’s historic center.
- John Lennon Wall - Once an ordinary wall, the John Lennon Wall has been adorned with Lennon-inspired graffiti and Beatles lyrics since the 1980s, symbolizing resistance against the totalitarian Communist regime. Today, it remains a popular attraction for both locals and tourists in Prague.
