- Prague Castle - As the largest castle complex globally, Prague Castle is a must-see on any Prague tour. This magnificent architectural masterpiece, completed over centuries, majestically overlooks the city from a hill. Established in 870, it serves as the Czech president’s residence. The complex is dominated by the awe-inspiring, predominantly Gothic Saint Vitus’ Cathedral, which took an incredible 1,000 years to construct. Under Emperor Charles IV, it was the seat of the Holy Roman Empire. During darker times, Adolf Hitler occupied it. In brighter days, the first democratic president Tomáš G. Masaryk and dissident-playwright-turned-president Václav Havel governed the country from here.
- Lesser Town - Prague’s Lesser Quarter boasts a fascinating history. Situated below Prague Castle and stretching along the Vltava River, it began as small settlements outside the castle’s defenses. Initially, the population was mainly ethnic German merchants invited by King Přemysl Otakar II. The town suffered fires during a Hussite battle in 1419 and again in 1541, which also damaged St. Vitus’ Cathedral. In 1257, these settlements merged to form a separate royal town. Originally named Malé Město Pražské (Prague Lesser Town), it later became known as Malá Strana (Lesser Quarter). The area features many splendid buildings once owned by nobility, such as the Valdštejn (Wallenstein) Palace.
- St Nicholas Church - St. Nicholas Church is Prague’s most exquisite Baroque church and a prominent feature of the Lesser Quarter. W.A. Mozart enjoyed practicing on the organ here due to its excellent acoustics.
- John Lennon Wall - Visitors exploring the small streets near the river in the Malá Strana district may stumble upon a long wall adorned with graffiti. Initially, its purpose might be unclear, but upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that it is a tribute to John Lennon. Graffiti began appearing on this wall (owned by the Knights of the Maltese Cross) during the Communist era. The Beatles and Lennon had a significant following in the former Czechoslovakia, and when news of Lennon’s death in 1980 reached the country, some fans were determined to honor him. This was a challenging task, as Western music was banned at the time, and fans risked imprisonment for openly expressing their admiration for John Lennon.
- Charles Bridge - The Charles Bridge is arguably the most stunning Gothic bridge worldwide. Commissioned by King Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, the bridge has served as a vital link between Prague’s Old Town, the Lesser Quarter, and Prague Castle for centuries. The bridge features 30 saintly Baroque statues, mostly sandstone, added in the 18th century. Most statues seen today are replicas. The first statue erected on the Charles Bridge is bronze, depicting St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of Bohemia. According to legend, John of Nepomuk refused to disclose the confessions of King Wenceslas IV’s wife and was thrown off the bridge to his death. That night, five stars appeared in the sky above his death site, which is why a five-starred halo always adorns any statue of St. John of Nepomuk. Charles Bridge offers some of the most breathtaking views of Prague’s historical center.
- Klementinum - Originally founded as a Jesuit college, the Klementinum now houses the National Library, containing many valuable book collections.
- Pinkas Synagogue, Jewish Museum in Prague - Constructed in the 16th century, the Pinkas Synagogue is part of the Jewish Museum, with walls covered in the names of Jews who perished during World War II. The synagogue also provides access to the renowned Old Jewish Cemetery.
- The Old-New Synagogue - The Old-New Synagogue is the oldest functioning synagogue in Europe. Completed in 1270 in Gothic style, it was one of Prague’s first Gothic buildings.
- Staromestske namesti - The Old Town Square is likely Prague’s most famous square, surrounded by ancient palaces and churches. Many pivotal events in the country’s history occurred here.
- Old Town Hall with Astronomical Clock - The impressive Old Town Hall, featuring a 60-meter tower at one end, was built in 1338. Its earthy orange façade showcases a Renaissance window from 1520, the inscription Praga Caput Regni, and the Old Town coat-of-arms. Crowds gather hourly to watch the 15th-century astronomical clock, as Death tips an hourglass and rings a bell before the 12 apostles march by, the cock crows, and another bell rings.
- The Estates Theatre - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart enjoyed visiting Prague and chose the Estates Theatre for the world premiere of his opera Don Giovanni, which he conducted himself in October 1787.
- Karolinum - Emperor Charles IV founded Charles University in 1348. It is the oldest university in the country and one of the oldest in Europe.
- Wenceslas Square (Vaclavske namEsti) - Wenceslas Square is part of the New Town, founded by Emperor Charles IV in 1348. Originally called the Horse Market, Wenceslas Square witnessed many pivotal events, such as the Velvet Revolution in 1989, which ended the Communist regime.
- Prasna brana - The Powder Tower, also known as Powder Gate, is a Gothic tower serving as a gateway to the Medieval Royal Route and is one of Prague’s most iconic buildings.
- Obecni Dum - The Municipal House (Obecni dum) in Prague was built on the site of the former Royal Court in 1912 to celebrate the Czech nation. This representative building, known for its famous concert hall and beautiful decorations, is among the jewels of Prague architecture.
