Living Like Royalty: A Week of Castles and History in Prague and Bohemia
Embark on a journey through time with the Aristocracy Week tour in Prague and Bohemia. Experience the grandeur of medieval castles and the charm of historic towns, all while living like royalty.
A Royal Welcome in Prague
As a former professor of European history, I have always been drawn to the allure of castles and the stories they hold within their ancient walls. When I heard about the Aristocracy Week tour, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. My wife and I arrived in Prague, greeted by a private car that whisked us away to the Chateau St. Havel, a wellness hotel that would be our home for the next two nights.
The Chateau St. Havel, with its romantic ambiance and historical charm, was the perfect introduction to Prague. Nestled amidst lush gardens, the chateau offered a serene escape from the bustling city. Our room, a classic double, was adorned with period furnishings that transported us back to a time when nobility roamed these halls. Each morning, we indulged in a sumptuous buffet breakfast, fueling us for the day’s adventures.
Our exploration of Prague was nothing short of magical. With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, we delved into the city’s rich history, visiting iconic landmarks such as the Hradcany Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Charles Bridge. The architectural grandeur of these sites, built predominantly in the 14th century under the reign of Charles IV, left us in awe. A leisurely boat trip along the Vltava River provided a unique perspective of the city’s skyline, a blend of Gothic spires and Baroque domes.
Discovering the Beauty of Bohemia
Leaving Prague behind, we journeyed south to the enchanting Castle Hluboká. The three-hour transfer was a scenic drive through the Bohemian countryside, a landscape dotted with charming villages and rolling hills. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the sight of the castle’s white towers rising majestically against the sky.
Castle Hluboká, with its neo-Gothic architecture, is reminiscent of England’s Windsor Castle. As we wandered through its opulent rooms, I couldn’t help but imagine the lavish balls and gatherings that once took place here. The castle’s art collection, featuring works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, was a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage.
Our time in Bohemia also included a visit to Český Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This picturesque town, with its cobblestone streets and medieval charm, was a highlight of our journey. The Český Krumlov Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the Vltava River, offered breathtaking views of the town below. As we explored its courtyards and gardens, I was reminded of the intricate tapestry of history that weaves through this region.
Relaxation and Reflection in Karlovy Vary
Our adventure continued westward to the spa town of Karlovy Vary, where we spent two nights in a romantic castle. Known for its thermal springs and elegant architecture, Karlovy Vary has been a retreat for European aristocracy for centuries. The town’s colonnades, lined with mineral water fountains, invited us to partake in the tradition of sipping the healing waters.
A free day in Karlovy Vary allowed us to unwind and reflect on our journey. We strolled through the town’s lush parks, visited the Moser Glass Museum, and indulged in a relaxing spa treatment. The tranquility of the surroundings provided a perfect backdrop for contemplation, a moment to appreciate the historical richness we had experienced.
Our final night was spent in a former monastery above Prague Castle, a fitting end to our aristocratic adventure. As we gazed out over the city, the lights of Prague twinkling below, I felt a deep connection to the past, a reminder of the enduring legacy of Europe’s noble heritage. This journey through Prague and Bohemia was not just a tour; it was a passage through time, a chance to live like royalty, if only for a week.
