Meissen Cathedral - Also known as the Church of St John and St Donatus (German: Meißner Dom), this Gothic church is located in Meissen, Saxony. It stands on the castle hill of Meissen, next to Albrechtsburg Castle, forming a significant part of the iconic Meissen skyline overlooking the River Elbe. Established by Emperor Otto I in 968, it replaced an older Romanesque church. The current hall church was constructed between 1260 and 1410, featuring Gothic sculptures of founder Emperor Otto and his wife Adelaide of Italy, along with paintings from Lucas Cranach the Elder’s studio. In 1425, Margrave Frederick I of the House of Wettin commissioned the Prince’s Chapel as his dynasty’s burial site. The twin steeples were added in 1909.
