- Cesky Krumlov Castle - Český Krumlov Castle is perched atop a hill in the city and features five castle courtyards. Its origins date back to 1240 when the first castle was constructed by the Witigonen family, the principal branch of the influential Rosenberg family.
Today, the castle is recognized as a national heritage site and is a prominent tourist destination. The entrance fee is 320 CZK per person, with a reduced rate of 220 CZK for seniors over 65 and children. It is open from April 2nd to October 31st, except on Mondays when it is closed.
- Historic Center of Cesky Krumlov - Encircled by the Vltava River, the town’s compact center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It boasts period houses, churches, museums, hotels, restaurants, and cafes linked by narrow cobbled streets. Highlights include the Castle, Svornosti Square (town square), and the stunning Castle promenade bridge built atop a Roman aqueduct. There are also numerous souvenir and gift shops catering to tourists.
- Minorite Monastery - The beautifully renovated Minorite Monastery is a must-see. The ticket includes two parts: the monastery itself (and church) and an adjacent area with items from the collection and information about the renovations. The paintings, statuary, and frescoes are exquisite and well-restored. Note the strict no photography policy in most areas. The gardens are delightful and free to enter.
- St. Jost Church - St. Jodock’s Church, along with a hospital, was established around 1330 by Krumlov ruler Peter I of Rosenberg. The hospital offered basic medical care to the town’s sick and poor. Between 1594 and 1599, architect Dominic Cometta rebuilt the original church and added a tower. The new church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and Peter Vok of Rosenberg intended it for the Protestants in Český Krumlov. However, this plan was abandoned, and Peter Vok was interred in the family tomb at the Vyšší Brod monastery. After his death, the church was returned to the Catholics and rededicated to St. Jodock. In 1765, the church tower was remodeled in the Baroque style, but by 1788, as part of reforms by Emperor and Bohemian King Joseph II, it was abolished and gradually converted into a residential house. The hospital remained operational until 1922.
- Latran houses - This narrow cobbled street is part of the old town and is lined with medieval houses. It remains unchanged over time, offering a wonderful opportunity to step back into the medieval era. It’s a perfect place to relax and unwind.
- Church of St. Vitus - Entry is free, and the atmosphere was very quiet and serene during the visit. The interior is somewhat dark, creating an authentic ambiance reminiscent of its original construction. Visitors can capture excellent photos from the back of the church.
- Former Jesuit Seminary - Now home to the regional museum, this building showcases an intriguing mix of clothing, artifacts, and information about the surrounding area, covering periods from early prehistory to the modern post-Communist era.
The visit takes less than an hour, with the highlight being a wooden model of the old city from the 18th century. This alone justifies the admission price!
The more recent history may be less visually striking, but it offers a captivating narrative (especially for history enthusiasts) of the region’s events from the First World War to the present day.
A visit is highly recommended.
- Svornosti Square - This small medieval square is surrounded by period buildings and features a simple Plague column, a fountain, and the Town Hall. The square is encircled by cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal spot to relax and unwind in a medieval setting.
