- Pompeii Archaeological Park - Located in southern Italy’s Campania region, Pompeii is a city overshadowed by the active volcano, Vesuvius. Renowned for its ruins, the city was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
- Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for all major public buildings related to city administration, justice, business, trade activities like markets, and the main sites for citizen worship.
- Tempio di Giove Capitolino - The Temple of Jupiter commands the north side of the Forum, with the scenic backdrop of Mount Vesuvius. When the colony was established in 80 BC, the temple underwent significant renovation, transforming into a true Capitolium with three cult statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, resembling those of the Capitolium in Rome, placed on a high base for visibility to all in the Forum square.
- Macellum - The Macellum features a tuff quadriporticus with an elevated worship hall on the eastern side, aligned with the entrance. Niches in the side wall house copies of two marble statues, a female and a male armed figure, along with a fragment of a larger statue, likely an emperor, Titus or Vespasian, indicating the area’s dedication to the imperial cult. To the left is a room for sacred board meetings, and to the right, a large room with a masonry counter, possibly for selling fish.
- Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Situated behind the Temple of Jupiter, the Forum Baths date back to the years following the founding of the veteran colony by General Silla in 80 BC. Separate entrances were provided for women’s and men’s quarters. The men’s section includes an apodyterium (dressing room), also used as a tepidarium (medium temperature baths), frigidarium (cold baths), and calidarium (hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths suffered significant damage during the earthquake of 62 AD.
- Via dell’Abbondanza - Via dell’Abbondanza was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, running east/west from the Forum to Porta Sarno. In ancient times, the street was bustling and lively with numerous shops, workshops (“officinae”), cafes, snack-bars, and restaurants offering food and drink.
- Basilica - Covering 1,500 square meters, the Basilica was the most opulent building in the Forum, used for business and the administration of justice.
- Lupanar - The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most renowned brothel in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, notable for the erotic paintings on its walls. “Lupanar” is Latin for “brothel.” The Pompeii lupanar is also referred to as Lupanare Grande. The brothel’s prostitutes were primarily Greek and Oriental slaves, earning between two and eight Asses (a glass of wine cost one As) for their services.
- Lupanar - The Lupanar is the most famous official brothel of Pompeii, situated on a narrow side street near the city’s center. This small, two-story stone building is unique for its purpose-built design, featuring five small rooms on the ground floor with built-in masonry beds. It is globally recognized for its well-preserved erotic frescoes above the doors, likely serving as a visual “menu” of services, and for the hundreds of graffiti left by visitors, offering a raw and intriguing insight into the social life and language of ancient Roman plebeians.
- Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is most famous for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, depicting the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city’s elite.
- Teatro Grande - The Teatro Grande is a grand horseshoe-shaped auditorium built into a natural hillside, designed to accommodate approximately 5,000 spectators. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, it was the first Greek-style stone theater in Pompeii and served as the city’s main venue for comedies, tragedies, and pantomimes. The theater features a grand tiered seating area and a large stage background (scenae frons), offering a spectacular glimpse into how the Roman elite and commoners alike enjoyed large-scale public entertainment.
- Basilica - The Basilica is one of the most important buildings in Pompeii, located at the southwest corner of the Forum. Built in the 2nd century BC, it served as the city’s primary center for legal and commercial activities, functioning as both a courthouse and a place for business transactions. Its monumental interior featured a central nave surrounded by towering columns and a raised tribunal where judges presided over hearings. As the oldest building of its kind in the Roman world, it stands as a fundamental example of pre-imperial civic architecture.
