This peaceful trail was once a bustling railroad corridor. The rails connected the Seacoast to the wider world, transporting people, goods, and even the famous beer brewed by Portsmouth brewmaster Frank Jones.

The railroad also played a part in one of the Seacoast’s most chilling tales. In 1873, Lewis Wagner fled following the infamous Smuttynose Island murders, beginning an escape that became part of one of New England’s most notorious murder mysteries.

Today, nature has reclaimed the corridor. Where locomotives once thundered, cyclists now glide along flat, well-maintained crushed-stone paths surrounded by wetlands, forests, and the shifting colors of the seasons.
