- Linhares da Beira - Located on the western slopes of the Serra da Estrela, Linhares da Beira was initially a Lusitanian hill fort. The Montes HermĂnios (the Lusitanian name for the Serra da Estrela), with its rich pastureland, abundant water supply, and protective mountain shelter, was a region inhabited by this Iberian tribe, from whom many Portuguese people believe they are descended. The name Linhares, meaning flax fields, originates from flax (linho in Portuguese), which was once a significant crop in the area.
- Castelo de Linhares da Beira - In Celorico, you will visit one of the country’s oldest churches: the Church of Santa Maria.
The date of its foundation is unknown. Some authors suggest it was a mosque during the Islamic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. During the Christian reconquest of the peninsula in the 13th century, it was donated to the bishop of Guarda by Afonso III of Portugal.
- Celorico da Beira - Celorico da Beira is situated 550 meters above sea level, at the base of Serra da Estrela, and is traversed by the Mondego River. Visiting this area offers a continuous exploration of centuries of history in a mountainous setting, interspersed with streams and crystal-clear waters, where granite is predominant.
The Castle, a symbol of Celorico da Beira, features military architecture in a romantic-Gothic style from the 10th century, with an irregular layout corresponding to the Citadel. Also, visit the Igreja da MisericĂ³rdia, showcasing a beautiful example of Joanine art on its façade, and inside, a rich high altar and paintings by Isidro Faria. The baroque grandeur of the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria, built over the low houses of the old Castle quarter, is also noteworthy. In its narrow streets, a rare collection of Gothic portals and Manueline windows can be found.
