When I heard about the Douro Valley Food and Wine Tour from Porto, I knew it was a must-experience for my family. Join me as I share our unforgettable journey through this stunning region, filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.

A Journey Through the Douro Valley

As a travel writer and a mother of three, I am always on the lookout for experiences that can be both educational and enjoyable for the whole family. When I heard about the Douro Valley Food and Wine Tour from Porto, I knew it was something I had to experience. The Douro Valley, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, seemed like the perfect place to explore with my children.

Our adventure began in Porto, where we met our guide, Andre. He was not only knowledgeable about the region but also had a way of making history come alive. As we drove through the picturesque landscapes, Andre shared stories about the Douro Valley’s past, weaving in tales of his own family’s connection to the area. It was a wonderful way to introduce my kids to the history of this beautiful region.

Exploring Casal de Loivos

Our first stop was Casal de Loivos, where we visited D’ Origem. This family-owned estate offered a fascinating glimpse into the traditional methods of olive oil and wine production. My children were particularly intrigued by the old machinery, some of which dated back a century. It was a hands-on history lesson that they thoroughly enjoyed.

The tasting session was a highlight for all of us. We sampled olive oil, honey, and wine, and I was delighted to see my kids trying new flavors. The combination of olive oil and honey was a surprising hit! We ended up purchasing several bottles to take home, a testament to the quality of the products.

A Memorable Lunch at Taberna da Ponte

After our visit to D’ Origem, we headed to Taberna da Ponte for lunch. The restaurant was warm and welcoming, and the staff went out of their way to accommodate our dietary needs. The meal was a feast for the senses, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients that were simply prepared but bursting with flavor.

The Bacalhau à Brás and roasted chicken were particular favorites, and even my picky eaters couldn’t resist the tender, flavorful dishes. It was a meal that truly captured the essence of Portuguese cuisine, and one that we will remember for a long time.

Discovering Amarante

Our final stop was the charming village of Amarante. Andre’s stories about the local architecture and history added depth to our visit, and my children were fascinated by the tales of the patron saint and the unique traditions of the area.

We ended our day with a visit to a local café, where we sampled the region’s famous green wines and enjoyed some delicious smoked meats. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our day of exploration.

The Douro Valley Food and Wine Tour was a truly unforgettable experience. It offered a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights, all set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions. Whether you’re traveling with family or on your own, this tour is a must-do when visiting Porto.
