- Sameiro - Captivated by the beauty atop Sameiro mountain, Fr Martinho envisioned a monument to commemorate the triumph of Mary Immaculate and the Dogmatic Definition of the Immaculate Conception. - Bom Jesus Do Monte - Situated in Braga, northern Portugal, the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary offers expansive views, sometimes reaching the ocean, over the entire city of Braga, historically linked to the Roman-founded Bracara Augusta.
This cultural landscape evokes the Christian Jerusalem, recreating a sacred hill crowned by a church constructed between 1784 and 1811. The sanctuary exemplifies a European tradition of creating Sacri Monti, featuring chapels with sculptures depicting the Passion of Christ, along with fountains, allegorical sculptures, and formal gardens. The granite buildings have whitewashed stucco façades framed by exposed stonework. The renowned Staircase of the Five Senses, with its walls, steps, fountains, statues, and other ornamental elements, is the estate’s most iconic Baroque masterpiece.
- Se de Braga - “Older than the Cathedral of Braga” is a popular Portuguese saying that highlights the antiquity of any given reality. It was the first Portuguese cathedral to be constructed, predating Portugal itself. Its walls uphold a monument with over 900 years of history and religious significance.
The Cathedral of Braga began construction at the end of the 11th century and was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Pedro and dedicated to the Virgin Mary on August 28, 1089.
