This themed half-day tour on Terceira Island offers an exploration of the island’s volcanic origins! Begin with a climb to the top of Serra do Cume, where the stunning view of one of the Azores’ largest craters will amaze you. Visit Algar do Carvão to experience the unique sensation of being inside an extinct volcano. Enjoy a short walk along the trail that circles the fumarolic field of Furnas do Enxofre. Discover the Gruta do Natal cave, featuring a series of basaltic lava tunnels. Finally, visit the volcanic natural pools in Biscoitos, where you can admire the beautiful bay surrounded by black volcanic rock.

- ALGAR DO CARVÃO AND ITS VISITORS CENTRE ARE CLOSED DUE TO CONSTRUCTION, SINCE OCTOBER 20th. the construction OF “CAVE – azorean voLCANO sPELEOLOGICAL CENTER” OF ALGAR DO CARVÃO will take approximately 18 months.

Great trip with the family, amazing guide/tour!! - Amazing time with the most knowledgeable guide, Paulo!! Having a geology PhD candidate give you a geo-tour really cannot be beat. He was so nice & a great driver too. We appreciated him being flexible with time in order to give us the best opportunities for good views! Highly recommend this tour!! My whole family loved it.

An interesting afternoon in Terceira - Interesting tour of strategic, scenic points of this island, led by our guide Rafaela, attentive to their guests has accurately described the areas crossed , creating interest by providing detailed information, and establishing a relationship of cultural exchange between us . We would like to tell its owner that Rafaela has done accurately the work attributed to her, and that it would be correct, in our opinion to recognize the right reward for the added value that she has been able to give with her work.

Friendliness and unforgettable experience. - We had a great afternoon with our Guide Leonilde. She knows the island very well, its traditions, its fauna and its flora. In addition to being pleasant and good company, she accompanied us on the various visits to give us additional and much needed information. This is an activity we will not soon forget. Caving Adventure! - We had a great tour seeing the caves and landscape of the island and Rafaella was a great tour guide! We really enjoyed it and learned a lot about Terceira too.

Spectacular and educational tour - Whilst we weren't blessed with the best weather, Chris proved an excellent tour guide, driving us around the volcanology highlights of the island and giving us loads of information. She was also full of local knowledge and told us much of the recent history of this beautiful island.
Whilst the lava tube (Gruta do Natal) and the sulphur springs (Furnas do Enxofre) were amazing, the highlight was the enormous Algar do Carvao.
This trip was well worth doing!

Caving tour - Really enjoyed the afternoon tour with Chris, she was prompt to pick us up from hotel and then collected 2 others from their hotel before setting off.
She was very informative and happy to explain all sorts of information about the island as we drove to our first stop. During the afternoon we went inside the cathedral caves, down a lava tube saw sulphur steam bubbling from the rock and ended at the cheese tasting bar!
Fascinating experience, one I definitely recommend to visitors to this beautiful island.

Terceira caving with Tanya - Amazing!! Wonderful tour and so much incredible information. Tanya was knowledgeable and fun as a guide. We were so impressed. Highly recommend this tour. Caves, volcano, and cheese factory with ice cream- who could want more!!!

Disappointing non-event - I had booked this tour well in advance and was looking forward to it. There I was, waiting to be picked up, as arranged, outside the hotel. After 20 minutes of no-show, I phoned the number and was informed that Algar de Carvão isn't open on Mondays, so the operator had cancelled the trip.
This incompetence ruined my trip to Terceira. The tour operator should obviously not accept bookings for days when attractions are closed. I could easily have planned to do things differently had I been warned in time. I asked for a refund over the phone - after all, it was the operator who cancelled, not me - but so far it has not been forthcoming.
