A Journey Through Time: Discovering Portland’s Black History

As a former university professor of European history, I have spent countless hours delving into the past, unearthing stories of ancient civilizations and architectural marvels. Yet, my recent journey to Portland, Maine, offered a fresh perspective on history, one that was both enlightening and deeply moving. My wife and I embarked on the Portland Black History Walking Tour, a two-hour exploration that promised to reveal the hidden narratives of Black Portlanders who shaped the city, state, and nation.

The Heart of Portland: A Walk Through History

Our guide, Dugan Murphy, greeted us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm for the stories he was about to share. As we began our walk through the cobblestone streets of downtown Portland, I was immediately struck by the historical richness of the area.
