Cap Malheureux - About the Red Church at Cap Malheureux
The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel is one of Mauritius’s most famous churches, known for its striking red roof against the turquoise sea and azure sky.
Located just ten minutes from Grand Bay, Cap Malheureux is a small fishing village. Its name translates to “Unfortunate/Unhappy Cape” due to the many ships that have floundered there in the past.
The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church is renowned for its charming red roof, attracting many curious visitors and providing a picturesque backdrop for memorable photos. Founded in 1938, this simple chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Ideally situated at the northernmost point of Mauritius, it offers breathtaking views of the five northern islets, including Coin de Mire (Gunner’s Quoin).
This Roman Catholic Church attracts numerous visitors and worshippers. On Sunday mornings, many tourists join the mass. The church and the beach behind it are popular spots for newlyweds to take photos, so encountering couples here is common. The beach allows you to soak up the sun and enjoy the view, while children can play in the white sand and explore aquatic life in the rock pools. Fishermen frequently dock here with fresh catches.
