• Pompeii Archaeological Park - Pompeii, known in Italian as Pompei, is a well-preserved ancient Roman city located in Campania, Italy, 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Naples, at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius. The city was established on a spur created by an ancient lava flow, north of the Sarnus (now Sarno) River’s mouth. In 79 CE, Pompeii, along with Herculaneum, Stabiae, Torre Annunziata, and other nearby communities, was destroyed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This event preserved the cities as a unique record of Greco-Roman life. In 1997, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Torre Annunziata were collectively recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
