The medieval town of Resina was built on the volcanic material left by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which destroyed the ancient city of Herculaneum, from which the current name is derived. Ercolano serves as a resort and a starting point for excursions to the Herculaneum excavations and for ascending Vesuvius by bus. The town also produces leather goods, buttons, glass, and the wine known as Lacryma Christi (Tears of Christ).
