- Polonnaruwa - Arrive in Polonnaruwa and embark on a morning cycling tour of one of the best-preserved ruins of ancient Ceylon – the UNESCO World Heritage City of Polonnaruwa, which served as the medieval capital of Sri Lanka. Today, enjoy cycling approximately 10km on gentle surfaces as you explore the ruins. This ancient heart of Sri Lanka was an important royal capital, with its well-preserved 12th-century ruins and impressive stone culture reflecting a rich history. Although nearly 1,000 years old, it is younger than Anuradhapura and generally in better condition. The monuments are arranged in a compact garden setting, making their development easy to follow.
- Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - In the afternoon, visit the Sigiriya rock fortress, a stunning archaeological site located in central Sri Lanka, built by King Kasyapa between 477 – 495 AD. It is a popular destination for photography enthusiasts. The 600-foot rock is visible for miles in all directions, towering above the surrounding plain with its magnificent complex of gardens, pools, and fountains. The path through the gardens, along stone stairways, leads to the Lion Gate, now reduced to a massive pair of brick paws. Only the paws remain from the enormous lion’s head. Halfway up the rock, along the iron staircase, is the mirror wall and its frescoes of beautifully drawn maidens, still visible today. These paintings once covered most of the western face of the rock, though many have been lost over time.
