- Polonnaruwa Vatadage - Located to the east of the Cultural Triangle, following the Anuradhapura period, is Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital, Polonnaruwa. Although the Polonnaruwa era lasted only two centuries, the impressive monuments and monasteries it left behind demonstrate its unforgettable legacy. The archaeological remains of Polonnaruwa are displayed at the Museum of the Central Cultural Fund and its visitor center. King Vijayabahu I defeated the Chola invaders and reclaimed the land after 52 years. He dedicated his long reign to restoring the country. However, Polonnaruwa is primarily known as King Parakramabahu’s city. He constructed walls to encircle the city and enhanced the fortifications of its inner city. The renowned Parakramabahu tank was created by linking and expanding three previous tanks of Polonnaruwa.
