Polonnaruwa - Meet and greet your chauffeur guide at Bandaranaike International Airport or your hotel in Colombo, then proceed to Polonnaruwa.
Polonnaruwa is one of Sri Lanka’s most significant archaeological sites, attracting numerous tourists during their holidays. Many of the monuments in Polonnaruwa are closely associated with Buddhism and Hinduism.
The Royal Palace, Lankatilaka Gedige (Temple), Gal Vihara (Temple), Demala Maha Seya (Temple), and Thuparama are notable sites.
After completing the first day of your tour, enjoy an overnight stay at a hotel in Polonnaruwa.
POLONNARUWA - ANURADHAPURA - SIGIRIYA
Anuradhapura - Anuradhapura, the capital of Sri Lanka from the 5th Century B.C. to the end of the 10th Century A.D., is the most celebrated of Sri Lanka’s ancient ruined cities. The city’s most famous relic is the sacred Bo Tree, believed to have grown from a branch of the tree under which the Buddha attained Enlightenment. Planted 2250 years ago, it is the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world. (Mihintale, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Isurumuniya, Ruwanwelisaya)
Sigiriya - After completing your tour in Anuradhapura, check in at your hotel in Sigiriya (a 2-hour drive) for an overnight stay.
SIGIRIYA – PIDURANGALA - DAMBULLA – COLOMBO
Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Climb the 5th-century AD rock fortress, Sigiriya, where King Kasyapa ruled. Enter through the lion’s paws, fitting for its name, ‘the Lion Rock.’ Admire the beautiful, unfading murals that have made Sigiriya famous. Ascend the steep staircase to view the terraced gardens and still-functioning cisterns. Walk through the tunnels leading to the palace to experience the past.
Pidurangala Rock - Your second destination is Pidurangala Rock, a massive rock formation almost directly opposite Sigiriya. Pidurangala offers an equally majestic view of rolling lake-and-land vistas. Aside from drone footage, the summit of Pidurangala is the best place to view the rock fortress itself.
Dambulla Cave Temple - After lunch, proceed to Sri Lanka’s largest rock, the Dambulla Cave Temple, built on a 600-foot-high rock. Located at an elevation of 1118 feet above sea level, a massive rock rises from the surrounding plains of Dambulla, standing 600 feet high and over 2000 feet in length. It houses the world’s most acclaimed cave complex, featuring magnificent Buddha images and rock paintings of vivid colors and shapes, constructed and painted from around the 2nd Century BC (Anuradhapura era) and continuing up to the Kandyan era of the 18th Century.
Colombo - After completing your Ancient Capital 3-day tour, you will safely return to your hotel in Colombo or be dropped off at the airport.
