Plovdiv ranks as the 6th oldest continuously inhabited city globally and the oldest in Europe. It has been settled since 4,000 B.C., starting with a Neolithic community, and has been conquered over the years by the Thracians, Greeks, and Romans.
Following the city tour, the journey continues inland to the stunning Rhodopes mountain, heading towards Asen’s Fortress, which is perched on elevated terrain offering panoramic views. There will be a 30-minute stop to appreciate the scenery of the mountains, the town of Asenovgrad, and the Thracian valley.
The final destination is the charming Bachkovo Monastery, the second largest of its kind.
The monastery’s structures form two rectangular courtyards – the original northern and the southern, added in the 19th century. Within the complex, visitors can explore the main church of the Virgin Mary, constructed in 1604, which houses a precious icon of Saint Mary from the 11th-12th century AD. According to legend, this extraordinary icon is believed to possess miraculous powers.
